Pitch and Putt
Given the weight of debt incurred in progressing the Sports Complex project, the Community Council decision to acquire at the same time a possible two acres adjacent to the tennis courts for the purpose of a pitch and putt course was particularly courageous. Now that the younger ones had had their needs adequately provided for, the committee forged ahead motivated by a desire to provide a sporting outlet that would attract the active interest of senior citizens. Dissenting voices were raised, asserting there was an inadequate level of interest and that the proposal could lead to an unsustainable drain on meagre resources. But the Council forged ahead and in 1986 the ground was purchased for a sum of £12,000.00. In due course a twelve-hole course became a reality thanks to the initiative and resourcefulness of visionary Council members such as Michael Gowen, Michael Walsh and Sean Hegarty.
An extra 1.6 Dairygold acres were added in 1995 and this allowed for the provision of eleven extra greens and a log cabin clubhouse at a cost of more than £17,000.00. Kilworth Pitch and Putt Club is now seen as a major asset to Kilworth and the vibrancy of the club with its regular competitions and social occasions for young and old is matter of no little pride in the community.
